그리고 그의 갑작스러운 죽음이 또다시 논란을 불러왔다. 어떤 이는 ”현대의 성 바울“이라며 그의 신앙적 열정을 칭송했지만, 한편에선 ”혐오와 분열의 아이콘“이라며 애도를 거부했다. 이런 애도와 비판의 전선은 미국 사회를 넘어 전 세계로 이어졌고 한국에서도 일부 유명인들의 추모와 애도 글을 두고 공방이 벌어졌다. 또 일부 단체는 “우리가 찰리 커크다”라는 피켓을 들고 추모 집회를 열어, 해외 극우와의 연대라는 새로운 논쟁까지 촉발했다.
